Pacific Northwest Coastal Road Trip
You know that feeling when you cross a dream destination off your bucket list? That’s how we felt having finally completed our long-awaited Pacific Coast Highway road trip exploring all the way up the West coast. Driving California’s Pacific Coast Highway from LA, stopping through Oregon and Washington is one of the most iconic road trips in the U.S. This post covers everything you need to know including where to eat, drink, and explore- and all the places we stayed throughout our trip up the beautiful coast.
CALIFORNIA
LOS ANGELES
LA was our first destination, and our first big stretch of driving from Tucson, Arizona. So we got in late afternoon and only had time to explore a little before grabbing dinner and drinks. Then the next morning we picked up some coffee, had brought our own quick breakfast and were on the road again! We’ve included restaurant recommendations from others that we will be trying in the future this fall when we visit again. LA is such a huge city, there are endless amounts of things you can do for fun! Enjoy!
EAT:
Petit Trois- French amazing-ness that’s highly recommended. “This place is a treasure. Very small and intimate. Perfect for dates. “
Jon & Vinny’s- Italian and wood fired PIZZAS
Son Of A Gun- Seafood, sandwiches, salads & more!
Gjusta- This place has been recommended many times, lots of food options! Gjusta is a California deli, bakery, café, and market influenced by traditional East Coast Delis, European Markets, and Parisian Bakeries.
Osteria Mamma- This place has some amazing Italian food. We’ve visited Italy and these pasta’s came pretty damn close to the good stuff. I enjoyed the Bigoli Cacio e Porcini and Zach had the Tagliatelle Bolognese. They were both super delicious, and went perfectly with our Rubesto Montepulciano d’Abruzzo vino. We would definitely recommend this place if you’re in L.A.
Milk- Dessert city. Ice cream sandwiches, bakery, and other sweet & creamy treats- MMM!
DRINK:
Lono Hollywood- A unique tiki bar. ”The coolest and most unassuming tropical oasis in a smattering of Hollywood bars!”
Perch- An awesome rooftop bar!
Birds & Bees- This place is a nice little basement bar with craft cocktails.
Good Times at Davey Wayne’s- This place was recommended by a few friends who live near and have visited through- and we would pass the recommendation right along after hanging at this awesome speakeasy dive bar. I love the vibes of this bar. First off, to enter and find this secret groovy bar, you enter through an old refrigerator with a Miller beer neon sign above it. Uh, FUN! Once you enter, this bar is throwing it back to the 70’s with shag rugs, lots of wood walls and deliciously fine drinks. This indoor/outdoor bar has comfy hammocks and other outside seating, all different sorts of cute 70’s decor, and live music most nights. They also have a surprisingly great old fashioned cocktail ON TAP! Can I get one of these at my house? Plus many other reasonably priced drinks + happy hour booze and snacks. You can make reservations to reserve tables for larger parties for a deposit $$$, or just do what we did and walk in! Good Times at Davey Wayne’s is definitely a place to have a GOOD TIME!

Walk around and people watch all the interesting LA folks!
SAN FRANSICO
In a town full of so many things to do, places to eat, and things to see, it can be overwhelming choosing which to pick! I’ve narrowed it down to a few of our favorites and recommendations we we’re told to visit in the gloomy, but beautiful San Fran.
EAT:
Eight AM- The perfect little breakfast place!
Good Mong Kok Bakery- “Ask Chinatown neighbors about their go-to dim sum, and the answer is either grandma's or Good Mong Kok.” Located in Chinatown. There will be a line here, but it moves quickly and it’s worth the wait!
Kaisen Don- Sushi anyone?
Marufuku Ramen SF- Ramen’s the answer, what is the question?
Tony’s Pizza Napoletana- Yummy wood fired pizza! Tony’s is always a good choice.
Dumpling Kitchen- This is where we went for dinner. They have the absolute best soup dumplings in town! You’ll most likely have to wait for a table, but not for long. You can put your name on the wait list through their website or through Yelp. They give you complimentary Oolong tea, and the food is delicious! We left very happy and FULL.

REDWOODS - W/ THE GENTLE GIANTS
The Redwoods were definitely a huge HIGHLIGHT of our entire trip. We absolutely love camping, and this was a dream campsite. We fell in love with these gentle giants. We were lucky enough to have some elk friends join us one morning, they ended up staying through us cooking breakfast. The elk were chill as a cucumber, just hanging calmly with us as we sipped our coffee. IT WAS SO COOL! The hikes around us were amazing. Our kayaking adventure was everything, see more details on that below. A few days here is all you need just relaxing + hanging at your campsite, hugging all the humongous trees, and hiking all around while exploring. ❤️
*sighhhhhhhh, let’s go back.*
Our Campsite: Elk Prairie Campground
Trails + Hiking Area:
Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park
Jedediah Redwoods State Park- The park we stopped at in the middle of our kayak adventure
James Irvine-Miner’s Ridge Loop
Boy Scout Tree Trail- One of our favorites!!
Lady Bird Johnson Grove
Redwood Creek Trail
Another big HIGHLIGHT:
Kayaking through the Redwoods!
We used the company Redwoods Ride, who offer all kinds of other rentals and guides. We chose to rent single kayaks for about 4 hours at $50 bucks a person. They gave us tips on hikes to stop at, which rapids to look out for and more! The scenery was gorgeous, serene and just magical. It was also a great workout! It was so much fun and we definitely would recommend this to anyone visiting the amazing Redwoods.

SANTA CRUZ
We decided to stay in Santa Cruz because we wanted to be close to Big Sur, but didn’t want the price tag that came with it. Santa Cruz is just a short 30 minute drive to the beginning of Big Sur, which worked for us. We also got to check out this beach town a bit too! Win, win!
EAT:
Harbor Cafe- Great spot for breakfast!
Linda’s Seabreeze Cafe- Another solid breakfast choice.
The Point Market- More breakfast! Come here for their Breakfast Burritos.
Poke House Santa Cruz- We grabbed a quick + healthy dinner here. It’s a make your own poke bowl joint. Fresh and delicious!
Miyako Japanese Restaurant- Best sushi in town.
Betty’s Burgers- Can’t go wrong with a good burger! Try the Basic Betty with Sweet Potato Fries.
Los Gallos Taqueria- Might not beat Tucson Tacos, but mmmm tacos!
Lago Di Como- Bon appetito! Dacci tutta la pasta e il vino!
Penny’s Ice Creamery- Stop by for a scoop… or five. 🍦
DRINK:
99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall- A beer lovers dream.
Front & Cooper- A lovely craft beer and cocktail joint in the Abbot Square.
Jury Room- A classic dive bar with pool, darts, and more!
Capitola Wine Bar- Proven fact: Wine is good for the soul.
Vino Locale Wine Bar and Tapas- Another great wine bar located on the Santa Cruz Wharf with some great ocean views if you snag a table by the window + live music!!
Beer Thirty Bottle Shop & Pour House- Pour your own beer bar. Grab a wristband, scan in, pour, and drink up!
PLAY:
Be a true tourist, and visit the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Note: it can be very busy, and parking can be hard to find.

Go Kayaking Monterey Bay
Chardonnay Sailing Charters- We booked this sailboat cruise on our last evening there and it was great! This company offers several different styled sails, champagne brunch, pizza and brewery collab, winery and cheese collab, etc. We purchased a pizza beer night and had unlimited wine, beer, and pizza on our afternoon cruise. Definitely worth it and recommend to others passing through Santa Cruz! Check out their website here.
BIG SUR
If you’re looking for a California road trip, you HAVE TO add a drive through Big Sur to your list! It has some of the most breathtaking parts of the California coastline found on Highway 1. Pray that the sun is out (the colors pop like crazy!) and explore this beauty up and down as much as you can. Make sure to read up on my tips below before visiting. We will definitely be back, Big Sur!
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO - ESSENTIAL BIG SUR TIPS
The most popular time to go is from April to October. The weather is the nicest but it’s also the most crowded.
There is no service in Big Sur, so plan ahead and download your google maps before you get there so you can have offline access, or grab an old school map like we did!
Everything in the area is pricey from gas to food to hotels. If you want to save money, you can pack some snacks, gas up before, and stay nearby in Carmel By The Sea, Santa Cruz, Monterey, or even better camp someplace close! (Book camping at least 6 months ahead, yes- it gets crazy full!)
